What is the difference between glossy and matte WOLED coatings?

The two finishes trade the same two things: clarity against glare. A matte, or anti-glare (AG), coating adds a diffusing layer that scatters incoming light. Reflections spread out and soften, so a bright office stays usable. The cost is a faint grain and a slightly softer image. Matte has been the monitor default for about 20 years.

A glossy finish drops the diffusing layer entirely. The surface is clear and smooth, so the image looks sharper and colors and blacks “pop”. However, any light source behind you reflects back sharp and mirror-like. So glossy keeps black depth and clarity, while matte shields you from glare.

Glossy demand climbed since 2022 as OLED adoption spread. Buyers chased the best possible picture and compared their monitors to glossy phones, tablets and TVs.

There is no “best” overall screen coating, it’s a very subjective preference and as you’ve seen from the above comparisons and testing, they all seem to have their strengths and weaknesses.

Why WOLED could only be matte until 2026

For years the coating was locked to the panel type. Every LG Display WOLED panel shipped with matte AG. Every Samsung Display QD-OLED panel shipped semi-glossy with a light anti-reflection treatment. You knew the finish from the technology alone: 27", 32", 34", 39" and 45" WOLED monitors were all matte.

Then 2026 broke that lock in three directions at once. LG Display started shipping a native glossy WOLED panel. Samsung Electronics began adding a matte AG layer over semi-glossy QD-OLED. And Dough bonded Corning gorilla glass onto a standard matte WOLED panel to make it glossy.

That gives buyers five coatings to weigh instead of two. TFTCentral tested all of them side by side: native glossy WOLED, standard matte WOLED, semi-glossy QD-OLED, matte-coated QD-OLED, and the gorilla-glass glossy WOLED in Dough’s Spectrum Black. Dough’s glass carries a Corning DXC anti-reflective layer, which the company says cuts reflections by 70% and removes the matte grain.

The finish that started this wave was the Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDMG . It is a glossy version of the common 27" 1440p 240Hz WOLED panel, supplied glossy from the factory on an Asus exclusive. It was the first native-glossy WOLED monitor anyone could buy.

Black depth and reflections, ranked

Native glossy WOLED retains black depth about 15% better than matte AG WOLED, and the Dough gorilla-glass version lands about 10% better than matte. Glossy holds blacks better because it does not diffuse and “spread” light across the panel.

On grain, semi-glossy QD-OLED and the gorilla-glass WOLED look cleanest. Native glossy shows a very slight grain. Matte AG WOLED is the grainiest of all, worse than a modern IPS LCD screen.

QD-OLED carries a separate weakness that no coating fixes. It has no polarizer, so ambient light wakes its Quantum Dot layer. Black depth then climbs to about 3.1x the matte WOLED level, and higher is worse. Blacks turn grey with a purple tinge as soon as a lamp hits the screen. In a dark room every panel here looks equally black; the gaps only open under light.

RealBlack Glossy and the new 2026 glossy WOLED wave

Native glossy WOLED is no longer an Asus-only trick. Gigabyte is rolling it out under the name RealBlack Glossy. The first models are the MO27Q28GR, a 280Hz Tandem WOLED screen, and the GO27Q24G, with more promised through 2026. This is the glossy WOLED buyers will find on store shelves.

RealBlack Glossy is LG Display’s v2.0 native glossy coating. The TFTCentral follow-up reports a zero-haze (0%) optical layer, down from the 3% haze of the 2024 coating. So the slight grain of the first glossy WOLED is gone. LG Display also claims a 38% drop in ambient reflections versus that 2024 glossy WOLED, rating the new layer at 1.1% ultra-low reflection.

The upshot for buyers is that coating becomes a checkbox on one monitor. On the MO27Q28GR the panel, spec and features match the matte MO27Q28G exactly; per Notebookcheck , the finish is the only difference. That screen reaches up to 1500 nits in HDR at 1.5% APL, carries DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, and covers 95% of DCI-P3.

Which WOLED coating fits your room?

Match the coating to your lighting rather than to a spec-sheet winner.

  • Dim room, gaming or media first: native glossy WOLED or RealBlack Glossy gives the cleanest image and the deepest blacks. Accept that a lamp or window behind you will reflect back sharply.
  • Bright office, all-day work: matte AG WOLED handles glare best, and the small black-depth loss barely shows in a lit room. The grain is the trade you take.
  • Glossy clarity with better glare control: the gorilla-glass Dough Spectrum Black beats native glossy on reflections. It costs more, and the long-term bonding is still an open question.
  • Any QD-OLED: semi-glossy and matte QD-OLED look clean, but blacks wash out grey-purple in bright rooms. Keep light sources behind the screen, not in front.

One more constraint decides what you can even buy: native glossy WOLED still only exists on the 27" panel. Larger WOLED sizes remain matte-only for now.
